Kucinich Says Transfer of Power Will Not Stop the
Bloodshed
April 7, 2004
The June 30th transfer of power from the U.S.- led Coalition
Provisional Authority to an interim Iraqi government is "a hoax
intended to deceive the American people into believing that this
nightmare of death and destruction is coming to an end," said
Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.
"There's not going to be any difference in our military posture
on July 1st from what it is on June 30th," said Kucinich, adding,
"Those aren't my words. Those are the words of Deputy Defense
Secretary Paul Wolfowitz." Wolfowitz made the comment to reporters
last Friday, April 2, following a briefing to the House Armed
Services Committee.
"The only thing that is going to change is the level of violence
aimed at our men and women in uniform," Kucinich said. "It will
become even deadlier." At least 30 U.S. military personnel have been
killed in the last 72 hours.
"On June 30th, all we will be doing is transferring power from
the right hand to the left hand – from the Coalition Provisional
Authority to a yet-unestablished interim government chosen under the
terms of a constitution written by the Bush Administration and
ratified by an Iraqi Governing Council installed by the Bush
Administration," Kucinich said. [Read

Challenges Democratic Party to Save American Lives, Bring Our Troops
Home
April 5, 2004
Following the deadliest 24-hour period of the year for the U.S.
military in Iraq, Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich
has scheduled a press conference for Monday, April 5th in downtown
Portland at which he will call on the Democratic Party and its
presumptive nominee Sen. John Kerry to take a position "in favor of
saving American lives and join me in calling for a U.S. withdrawal."
"How many more American lives have to be lost before the leaders
of the Democratic Party are willing to acknowledge that this war and
this occupation are a disaster?" Kucinich asked. "The Administration
took us to war on claims that have been proven to be lies and
exaggerations, but the ever-mounting losses of life and the prospect
of ever-escalating violence are deadly real and can no longer be
ignored." Kucinich made his comments amid reports that at least
seven U.S. soldiers were killed and at least 24 others wounded in a
clash with Shia militia in Baghdad, and at least three other U.S.
servicemen were killed in similar violence in other parts of Iraq.
"The United Nations must step in so U.S. forces can come home."

Kucinich Advocates Department of Peace, Invokes
Memory of Martin Luther King
April 5, 2004 In a speech given at
Appalachian State's Rosen Hall during his visit to Boone, North
Carolina, Congressman Dennis Kucinich quoted Martin Luther King, Jr.
and challenged the audience to choose love over hate and work for
peace in their own community. Yesterday was the twenty-sixth
anniversary of King's death.
"We have people that believe in
the inevitability of war," Kucinich said. "And what do we get? War.
We're the inheritors of this view and it's urgent to summon all the
powers within our humanity to challenge that view."
Kucinich
spoke of the legislation he introduced in 2001 to establish a
cabinet-level Department of Peace which aims to "institutionalize
non-violent principles." The department would provide a framework to
work on issues from the community to the international level.
"Imagine if we make that the work of the nation," he said.
"Where is it written that war is inevitable?

Dennis Kucinich Day in Carrboro, North Carolina
April 5, 2004
Carrboro, North Carolina Mayor Mike Nelson declared Sunday
Congressman Dennis Kucinich Day on the day of his visit to the
Orange County town. “One of the reasons I'm staying in this race
even though the nomination has been decided is to make sure the
Democrats have a voice for peace, for healthcare for all, for fair
trade, and for civil liberties," Kucinich told the crowd of three
hundred.
Kucinich also held a rally yesterday in Asheville
Saturday. According to Kucinich campaign organizer Gayatri Lee, the
more votes and delegates Kucinich can muster in the remaining
primaries and caucuses will give him leverage at the Boston
convention in shaping the Democratic Party platform.
His campaign continues, Kucinich said, "because I don't want to
see us trade a Republican version of the war in Iraq with a
Democratic version." That message came home for Tara Johnson, a
stay-at-home mom in Asheville, "I've never been interested in
politics until I heard Dennis speak. He's got the right message for
our country and for the world," Johnson said. [Kucinich
